Cutting & Stitching of Cotton Jhabla with Dori for Newborn Baby 2021 | Step by Step Tutorial for Beginners 2021

Newborn Baby's first dress - A Cotton Jhabla!

It is a common practice that the newborn wears Jhabla early few months after his/her birth. There is no difference between baby girl Jhabla and baby boy Jhabla. Cotton material is being used to make Jhabla because the baby's skin is very delicate. Most of the people prefer to use White color for Jhabla.

In this blog, we will learn in detail the Cutting and sewing/stitching of Jhabla.

    Measurement (inches) :

Chest - 20 inches ( size may vary, for example, we are taking 20 inches)

    Material Required: Cotton

    Cloth size: 1 meter approximately

    Cutting Guidelines :

Fold the cloth in 4 layers for front and back measuring (7 inches x 16 inches).

    Front & Back side measurement:

    0-1 = chest 1 / 4 x 3 = 5 x 3 = 15

    0-2 = chest 1 / 4 - 0.5= 5 - .5 = 4.5

    0-3 = chest 1 / 4  + 1.5 = 5 + 1.5 = 6.5

    2-5 = 0-3

    5-3 = 0-2

    0-6 = chest 1 / 12 = 20 ÷ 12 = 1.6

    0-7 = 1 inch (join 6-7 in neck shape)

    0-8 = chest 1/6 = 3.3

    0-8 = 2-4 (join 8-4)

    8-9 = 0.5 inch (join 6-9)

    9-5 = join in a armhole shape

Now cut on the marking (leaving 0.25 inches on top & 0.5 inches from the side for sewing allowance).

Unfold & Separate the two sides of Jhabla ( one for front & one for back).

Take the backside of the Jhabla, & cut 2 inches from the center of the neckline.

    Front side :

Take the front piece and cut the deep neckline for the front side of the Jhabla.

7-10 = 0.5 inch (give the shape of neckline)

PIPING / DORI FOR THE NECKLINE & ARMHOLE :

Now we have to make 4 strips

    1. To sew the edge of the neckline. ( Strip Measuring: whole round neck + 12 inches for Dori).

    2. To sew the cut on the backside. ( Strip Measuring: 4 inches).

    3. 2 strips for armholes (Measuring: the size of the armholes).

Cut the strips diagonally measuring 1/2 inches each.

Cut to Straightened the ends of the strips.

Join them together to make 4 strips of the size mentioned earlier.

    SEWING METHOD:

Sew the shoulders holding the front and backside (right side together).

Now attach the smaller strip on 2 inches cut (right side together) to the backside of the Jhabla. The sewing allowance would be 0.2 inches.

Now fold the strip on the backside and sew from the front side.

Now attach the long strip to the neckline. (similarly, as smaller strip attached on backside).

Note: start attaching from the backside, leaving 6 inches for the Dori.

Note: while folding the strip to the backside, start folding from one end of the Dori.

Now attach the armhole strips and fold them towards the wrong side of the Jhabla as well.

DECORATE THE ENDS OF DORI :

Cut 2 rectangular size cloth to attach to the ends of the Dori. (1"× 2")

Place the Dori in the center of the rectangle cloth.

    Fold the rectangle.

Sew the rectangle along with the Dori.

Turn the rectangular cloth to the right side.

Cut one corner of the rectangular cloth in a curve shape.

Now fold Jhabla to the wrong side and sew the sides of the Jhabla (0.5-inch sewing allowance).

Now sew the bottom of the Jhabla towards the wrong side (sewing allowance would be 1 inch).

Now our Cotton Jhabla with Dori for a Newborn baby is ready.
